Death Enthroned, Love Enslaved

Think of Mortality, and so tremble
that the despot Death lords over all
so that however Love assemble
a festive wedding in his festooned hall,
yet will Prima Nocta precede ever
so Love’s ceremony be broken
while that abhorrent king doth sever
marriage bonds and sacred Hymen’s token.
For however strong and faithful lord Love,
he is tenant in a tyrant’s lands
and Death reigns vast, as vulture to dove,
claiming with his covetous, cruel hands
like a greedy miser his grandson’s joys
and Love’s maiden wife as if his own
to father but stillborn girls and boys
while ruling, untouchable, on his throne.
